We are supporting The Voice Radio – Are You?

Last night my son and I were in the car stuck in a queue on the way out to Chivenor to see friends.

As we approached the tail end of the queue my son said let’s turn on the radio and listen to local travel to find out what is happening – I went on to explain to him about the radio station Heart and that I thought they were based in Exeter and this road issue would probably not get mentioned as they have to cover the whole of Devon’s roads which is a pretty large area!

His reply was to keep flicking through the radio stations saying

“There must be a local station that just covers North Devon?” He went on to say “Why is no one doing anything about this?”

“Ah ha” I said “there is”

I went on to explain to him about The Voice and that they are trying to bring local community radio back to North Devon. But it does not come cheap and it costs money to deliver this service to the local community that’s why it needs as many advertisers and donators as possible to keep it going – then you can turn on the radio and find out about your local roads, local events and local communities!

Well done The Voice – another supporter gained who has said he will spread the word at School for everyone to tune in on 16th March to 12th April on 107.1FM to listen to genuine local radio!

If you want to support The Voice North Devon then please visit their website for more information on advertising or simply spreading the word.

Festival FM is about to start broadcasting!

The latest in a series of local licenses is about to hit the North Devon airwaves!

This latest license is Festival FM and will broadcast on 107.1FM from Barnstaple and supports the North Devon Festival.

The schedule of presenters can be found here – The Voice – and I would like to wish them good luck & happy broadcasting!

Ever since Heart FM left North Devon there has been a hole in the ether, yes I know that Heart still broadcast here, and yes we still get adverts from local businesses but just like BBC Devon (actually the BBC are better in the way they include us) everything is broadcast from down south and North Devon, especially at times of crisis (take the school closures during the winter months), is often forgotten!

Here is a quote from Ian Starling – the main engine behind trying to revive local radio here -

‘So the IMPACT is potentially HUGE.  Basically ALL of North Devon will lose local commercial radio and in the years ahead SOME of North Devon will also LOSE BBC Radio Devon. And the decision that will make that happen whether in 2015 or even as far as whenever will be made in the next 6 weeks or so and needs to be stopped’

So, please listen to Festival FM and support Ian’s campaign! He would appreciate it!

I listen to Planet Rock on DAB digital radio…

I have to admit to not being a great radio listener, I cannot work with radio or music or chat going on in the background, but there are two places in my life where radio does happen – first, the alarm clock going off first thing most mornings and second whilst I am driving in the car!

In both places I listen on a DAB digital radio!

In the morning in deference to the choice of my other half we listen to Pirate FM, a Cornish commercial station! We live in North Devon, and since the demise of real local radio (Heart FM left North Devon to make a Devon-wide station) we actually get more local traffic news on this Cornish station than we do on Heart (we do live close to the border)!

I was disappointed when Heart left North Devon – the banter of Hopps & Chapple in the mornings quite often made me smile, and their affinity to the area was excellent! When the Barnstaple studio closed we were left with not a lot! We could carry on listening to a Devon based programme(s) or we could look elsewhere…as a sort of protest we went elsewhere.

Now, in the car, I was a great Radio 5 Live listener, but the quality of the DAB signal is poor – almost as bad as Medium Wave, which I was trying to replace. Going up the motorway, or near large towns the signal was fine but driving around North Devon it isn’t very good, it keeps disappearing, so again I was forced to go elsewhere – well I wasn’t going to Heart, and I discovered Planet Rock… I’m showing my age a bit, but they play my sort of music, and the DAB signal is fantastic!

Why can’t the BBC have a signal like that, oh.. and why can’t North Devon have a local radio station – well we do of sorts – these guys www.thevoicefm.co.uk and they would like to do it for real. Check them out and give them your support! Details of the issues in my next blog!
