This was too close to home!

The news from last nights horrific crash on the M5 is one that fills me with horror.

When we moved to North Devon nearly 9 years ago, we left behind many family and friends who regularly come to visit us, and we in turn regularly travel back for birthdays, school events (we have grandkids now), weddings…that sort of thing, and our main route is always A361 link road to junction 27 of the M5, up to Bristol and on to the M4 and off at junction 7, sometimes up to junction 5 where within a few minutes we are at our destination.

These trips happen throughout the year and we have been able to do the trip in just over 3 hours and occasionally it has taken 6-7 hours because of an accident, roadworks or an event that is happening close by.

Every time the grandkids come to stay and when they go home again we are on edge until we know that they have arrived safely whichever way they are travelling and so to hear of this horrific accident just brings it close to home about how lucky we have been. None of our family or friends were travelling this weekend, thank goodness.

My thoughts do go out to those people who did have friends & family travelling, and I hope for most of you everyone did arrive safely, albeit a bit late, and extra thoughts go out to those of you who have to now deal with a tragedy!

I followed this on twitter last night, but it wasn’t until this morning that I found out how bad it really was, and obviously a big thankyou has to go out to all the emergency services and others that helped out on the night!

Take care out there – the world can be a dangerous place!

This is incredibly sad. I was driving North along the M5 earlier in the day, although turned down the A358 at Junction 25 to join the A303. Conditions along the roads were very poor. On one piece of dual carriageway there was so much surface water I just took my foot off the accelerator and slowed down. Usually I stop once or maybe twice on my journey, but yesterday I stopped three times, spending half an hour in a lay-by when the rain was at its heaviest. I just didn’t think the risk was worth it.

Modern vehicles are very safe, but it’s important to remember that risks are still there, especially in bad weather.

Terribly sad, I didn’t hear of this until Saturday when my daughter saw it on Facebook. Many times I have driven or have been a passenger along that stretch of road and I think I won’t feel the same again when I pass the spot where the accident happened.

My thoughts and prayers go to all those affected by this awful tragedy.
