Taking on a challenge

I am currently taking part in a new challenge. I have subscribed to the 30 Day Blogging Challenge via nikkipilkington.com and am trying to write 30 blogs on different subjects. The subjects vary and not all blogs are about business. I must admit that I’ve had a bit of a break from it as work/family etc have kept me busy and I struggled to continue.

To do this challenge I’ve resurrected my old blog to do the challenge  and here I am on day 5, blogging on a site other than my own!

The challenge is quite hard, but in some ways that’s good. What I like about it is that each day you get an email with your blogging topic and then you can go and think about what to write. It really helps me decide what to do and after my little blogging break I must get back into it.

It’s great to have a new challenge to do and now I’ve re-started it I intend to carry on and hopefully get improve my blogging as time goes on.

If you would like to follow my challenge you can subscribe to my blog here.

A blog is a blog is a blog! Or is it?

Over at the North Devon Business Alliance they have a blogging competition going on – plenty of details can be found here -  http://www.ndba.org.uk/awards/ndba-blogging-competition – and I know for a fact that there are plenty of people in North Devon who write blogs, but so far the number of entries appear to be quite low!

It is the first month of six monthly competitions, with a winner of winners announced later in the year at the awards event that the NDBA will be a hosting! Competition will hot up as the months go by and so the first month will be probably the best chance of getting into a podium finish, but do people realise that their blogs are actually blogs and that they can enter, whatever the subject matter. Be it gardening, photography, writing, hobby related, retirement related, plus many more, all of these blogs are of interest to the rest of North Devon and beyond.

Have you wondered how you can get more people to visit your blog on a more regular basis?

Having a go in a competition has to rank as at least one way to get noticed – it doesn’t matter whether you win, people will want to know more about you and will find your main blog – mainly because you’ll put a link in it so that people can find it – links are good aren’t they for promoting your website and/or blog, so just from that perspective it is worth having a go, isn’t it?

I have entered this month & it focuses on my llamas – just in case you would like to read it – you can find it HERE! What do you think – a winning entry – could you do better – go on – have a go!

I lost my blogging motivation!

Don’t ask me why – it just sort of disappeared!

Last year was a very busy year for me, it sort of started in November 2010 when a clients accountant became very poorly and I had to step in to provide cover, and whilst she came back to work for a brief time she sadly passed away and things got that little bit busier. Throughout all of this I had my other businesses to run, and had joined a Mastermind Boardroom group here in North Devon, I was still organising our monthly NDBA lunches, and had helped set up this blogging website, but somehow I managed to find time for it all.

Interestingly, I decided that I really needed a holiday around Christmas time, grandkids cam to stay for 10 days…without mum… and I wanted to spend time with them. I wanted to unwind, relax and enjoy the break. I did all of that and came back to work on January 1st – yes, I came in on the bank holiday full of enthusiasm to get back to where I was. I had a good day that day, got my VAT return done, reconciled my bank account, set-up my 2012 diary & calendar, tidied my desk and got myself ready for the next day.

My client is based in Scotland so that had an extra bank holiday and I was able to get a lot of stuff sorted and felt in control, and whoooosh…. here we are at the end of January.

I haven’t done much else than look after my client and their problems and have had little time to look after my other businesses and somewhere I just lost the motivation to tap out the occasional blog.

On Friday, I went to the NDBA lunch, had a great meeting with Robert Z beforehand and thought, crikey, I had better get on and catch up and get involved again.

So here I am – time for a few blogs!

It’s all in the headline…

…I am participating in a 30 day blog challenge – set by Nikki Pilkington – and am now on day 13!

Actually I am not, I should be on day 15, but took the weekend off and so have days 13, 14 & 15 to do today in order to catch up!

In case you’re interested the challenge is on my Multiheat blog and if nothing else I am finding that it does inspire me to write not just there, but here as well! You should give it a go if you need a bit of help getting going!

Anyhow, the first thing people will see when they see a link to your blog will be the headline, and it will be the headline that draws people further to actually go and read the blog. Your content can be absolutely fantastic and very readable but if the headline doesn’t entice them further then the whole blog (including your time and effort) is wasted, so ensure that you spend time thinking about your headline, it’ll be worth it!

Now…I wonder whether anyone will read this blog?
